Mobile Cellular operators ready to launch 3G technology

Mobile Cellular operators ready to launch 3G technology

Karachi (June 26, 2012) – Almost four out of five operators have upgraded their networks on 3G technology in major cities of Pakistan for launching high speed data telephony services to their customers by next year.
Industry sources said that operators including, Mobilink, Telenor and Ufone have carried out advancement in their infrastructure during past one year in six to 10 cities whereas Zong is working aggressively to develop its network for 3G enabled services.
These cellular operators have already invested heavily on physical infrastructure in the past and are likely to capitalise more money on the advanced network as part of their expansion plans.
The cellular companies have rolled out 3G systems on their network and they will not require much additional investments, except for the payment of licence fees, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) also stated in its recently released report.
The auction of 3G mobile spectrums has potential of generating significant revenues for the government in the upcoming months, which can fetch minimum $785 million if the base prices are considered at $210 for three licences and $155 for one licence having separate terms and conditions.
The SBP earlier estimated that the licences auction will create an opportunity to pocket nearly $1 billion for the national kitty whereas the volume of investment may increase more than the quoted amount if foreign cellular operators do participate in the auction process, industry experts said.
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) earlier scheduled licences’ auctions on March 28 and 29 separately, however the government delayed its bidding process to review its policy, terms and conditions.
The cellular companies that fail to get licence of 3G will lose their potential part of subscription, as their valued subscribers will likely migrate on the networks having 3G services. The factor will make a strong business case for operators with 3G services despite low but increasing demand of Internet on mobile at present. The revenue growth of cellular operators could jump up with the introduction of value-added services via 3G technology through high speed Internet access and video streaming.
The cheap 3G-enabled handsets and availability of mobile applications in Urdu is necessary for the pickup in demand for 3G services. The demographics of Pakistan’s population, with a large share of young adults hints at the possibility of strong demand for 3G services for infotainment purposes.
The 3G depends upon a competitive environment in the industry, however it will be a challenging stage for companies to offer services at low prices initially
The shifting of new technology horizon and success of business will depend upon the pricing policies of the firms that introduce new applications, the quality of service, and the pace of marketing of 3G services.

Zong beat Warid

Zong beat Warid

Zong beat Warid in Number of Mobile Users – PTA Report
Long viewed as a minnow struggling to swim in the high seas, Zong has finally had its moment of truth.
Islamabad (April 23, 2012) – Zong a China Mobiles subsidiary has replaced Warid Telecom and jumped up one notch to become the number four mobile network operator in Pakistan.
According to the latest data released by the PTA, Zong edged past Warid, with a lead of over 250,000subscribers as of February end 2012.
The strategists at other mobile network operators have long disagreed with (and despised) Zongs resorting to price-competition.
After all, it was the Chinese dragon that has, sort of, forced other MNOs to participate in an environment of intense competition from 2008.
Eventually, a point came when there was very little left to fight over voice tariffs which are now one of the lowest in the world.
In a span of about five years, Zong has expanded itssubscriber-base from one million to nearly fifteen million by February 2012, despite being the late and last entrant in a market that was getting increasingly saturated.
Since June 2008, it is Zong that has been leading the race for net subscriber acquisition.
In the 44 months since, Zong had acquired nearly 40 percent of the markets new subscriber additions.
In other latest PTA statistics, the overall teledensity continues to be driven by the mobile teledensity.
As of February 2012, total teledensity had crossed 70.6 percent, as the cellular mobile teledensityreached 67.2 percent.
The teledensities in fixed and wireless local loopremained unchanged at 1.8 and 1.6 percent, respectively.
The mobile subscriptions (active for at least 90 days) had reached 116.2 million as of February 2012.
In recent years, MNOs have witnessed extensive uptake and usage from age groups above 60 and below 18.
Not only is the size of addressable market increasing, but the penetration in the hitherto virgin territories-especially in the rural and remote areas-is also driving subscriber growth.
Due to the phenomena like multiple-sim and mobile number portability, the active customers are believed to be somewhere between 70-80 percent of total subscriptions.
Interestingly, after discounting the total subscriptions by 20 percent and excluding the population below 10 and above 65 years of age, the mobile teledensity clocks in above 75 percent, a formidable number.
Zong has had a great run thus far and has truly arrived.
Yet the run-up to the number 4 spot has largely been on the heels of pricing.
It would be interesting to see how the executives at CMPak differentiate and position Zong from here on, and go for a larger slice of the pie.
That would also determine how aggressively they participate in the auction of 3G mobile spectrum.

Zong to hike operational fee from 1.5% to 2%

Zong to hike operational fee from 1.5% to 2%

Karachi: Zong has announced that it will charge 2 percent operational fee from April 10, which is 1.5 percent at present deducted along with 19.5 percent tax on every recharge of balance.

The overall operational fee will be deducted Rs 2.39 on Rs100 recharge instead of Rs 1.79, which means the hike of 60 paisas or 33.5 percent. The fee will be deducted in addition to 5 percent service charges and 10 percent withholding tax imposed by the cellular operators and government.
Zong official informed its customers
“Dear Customers in order to improve our services from April 10th, Operational fee on all recharges is being increased from 1.5 percent to 2 percent, (Govt taxes apply).”
Earlier, Telenor and Ufone increased the rate of their maintenance and service with by 0.5 percent in the past two months. Mobilink had already increased its Operational Fee by 100 percent to 2 percent in November 2011 on reload of balance for its prepaid customers.
