Story of the Border: Lahore Memoirs
Which country’s passport do you have?” the officer asked. “India” I replied. “You are our guest, our neighbor” told the officer with smiling face.
When we reached at Atari Border, in Pakistan side, in contrast with our perception, amazingly we didn’t see heavy deployment of armed persons in and around immigration centre. Instead, those polite officers of immigration centre welcomed us and after knowing that we came from India, they offered us cold water too. One of them , also handed over me a bottle filled with cold water and told that I should keep it for the way.
Regardless of our individual identity, we all were only Indian or Pakistanis on the borders of both sides. Our passports have been checked several times during crossing the border, intelligence units tried to ask so many things before crossing the border, however they all were very cooperative. When they knew that the visit is all about strengthening the Indo Pak relation, they became more supportive.
I can say without fear that some of them were not so generous, may be it was because of their tough training, mindsets or some practical experiences or anything else. i experienced some rude behavior of these men with/without uniforms who seems with some negativity and stress. On the other hand, some others were not only polite but also had positive hope for the future and they were willing to have a strong relations of friendship between the countries.
By this experience, it seems that its all depends on a person regardless of his country and job, to make himself aligned towards humanity. In my view, the role and responsibilities of security personals of any country is just to check on crime and thus to help in maintaining peace. If it is, then they must have filled with positive hope and energy to make their job more fruitful.
Role of these security personals are really important. These are the first people who experience the behavior of persons of both sides, and similarly these are the first persons whose behavior was experienced by the persons who crossed the borders. This first experience, in my view , must be such that we both should not be felt like stranger and feared, instead, the gesture must be friendly and polite. In practical, every outsider first meet with a common soldier and immigration officers of the country posted at borders. They are the first persons who represent the country as a whole only with their behavior.
Atari border has been developed in terms of its infrastructure and in India side, lot of renovations has been made to provide easiness to travelers. A comfortable bus service provided from Immigration centre to main gate of border (only about 500 meters). It is good to see that trade is continuing between us.Trucks were lined up on border for transporting goods across borders. I heard that crossing trucks from one country to other is not permitted and then both sides of trucks load and unload the goods to/from each other’s trucks.
It was a visit that kind of pulls me again and again to revisit. I hope and believe that we will get some sort of more relaxation on visa to get it accomplished. It will certainly be a tour to get experience of similar culture, love, emotions and feelings that, probably cannot be expressed in the form of words.

Tablets 12 Uniquely-Designed Keyboards
When it comes to tablets, there's no shortage of keyboards, docks and cases floating around. Here's a look at a dozen that stand out.Though Asus’ keyboard docks are optional add-ons for the company’s line of “Transformer” Android tablets, the existence of “Transformer” in the naming scheme denotes the ability to use the tablets like tablets or dock them into keyboard/touchpad combos for more laptop-like use.
Kensington KeyFolio Pro 2
Kensington’s new KeyFolio Pro 2 is the most shape-shifting of the items in our roundup. Its Bluetooth keyboard is held inside the leather-like case with magnets, which makes for easy and quick removal if you want to slim the KeyFolio down somewhat or set the tablet at a shallower angle while typing.
Pop the keyboard back in, and your iPad can be propped at a 70-degree angle while you’re working. Don’t need to type? The iPad can be propped down over the top of the keyboard at a 20-degree angle for lap use instead. With each position, the iPad’s angle is held in place thanks to Velcro, which makes the otherwise classy KeyFolio a titch less classy. But it’s more reliable than some solutions that rely on grooves or edges to keep the iPad in position. The spine of the KeyFolio features a pen holder, too, in case you want to rock things old-school.

Brookstone Bluetooth Silicone Keyboard
To me, Brookstone is a place where I go to be briefly entranced by oddball products before deciding that I don’t really need them. This $59.99 gizmo is one prime example. It’s a Bluetooth wireless keyboard for the iPad–it also works with Android devices, Windows PCs and Macs–which you can roll up and put in your pocket. Brookstone brags about the “comfort-touch” keys and points out that it’s spillproof, a boon if you’ve got kids or want to clean it regularly to combat germs.
Me, I’ve concluded that the only iPad keyboards I want are conventional ones with little plastic keys that actually travel up and down. But that doesn’t mean that I won’t pause and stare at this one when I next find myself at the mall.

Microsoft Surface Keyboard
At the June event at which Microsoft unveiled its Surface Windows 8 tablet, the company did a great job of raising expectations for the Surface keyboard–a cover which clicks onto the tablet with a magnetic connector and which sports a nearly-flat keyboard on the back. But it didn’t let the press people in attendance actually use it. Molded one-piece keyboards like this one are usually an unsatisfying substitute for real keys; Microsoft, however, says that motion detectors and gesture recognition make this one a joy. (Then again, it’s also going to sell a slightly bulkier cover with a conventional keyboard built in.) Let’s see what the consensus is once Surface shows up in late October or thereabouts.

Pakistan polio drive hit by murder of health worker
The push to eradicate polio from the world took more than one bullet last week. On 20 July, Muhammad Ishaq, a local worker with Pakistan's polio eradication programme, was shot dead in Gadap, a district of Karachi in southern Pakistan.
Three days earlier polio drives in the area were suspended when a Ghanaian doctor and his driver were shot and wounded as they drove through Gadap.
The shootings follow a ban on polio vaccination in northern Pakistan, declared in June by Hafiz Gul Bahadur, a Taliban commander. Bahadur is using the ban as an attempt to force a halt to US drone attacks.
Hostility to polio vaccination also rose after US agents used vaccination campaigns to gain access to families during the search for Osama bin Laden. A Pakistani physician alleged to have helped the CIA was sentenced to 33 years in prison in May.
Pakistan, Nigeria and Afghanistan are the only countries where wild polio virus persists, with Pakistan considered the toughest hold-out. Gadap is one of three strongholds of the virus in Pakistan, and as an urban area with many migrant families it is a source of outbreaks elsewhere in the country.
Hopes had risen that the programme was working, as no cases of polio have been reported in Karachi so far this year, after nine last year. Also, anindependent assessment of the polio eradication drive reported in June that water samples from Gadap were virus-free. The assessors attributed the progress to local workers – like Ishaq.

Great High-End Smartphones with Cheap, No-Contract Wireless Service
Not long ago, if you wanted a high-end smartphone, you had to sign a contract with a major wireless carrier and play by their rules. That meant multi-year service agreements, expensive monthly bills and new fees. Now, Verizon is forcing even more expensive shared data plans on new subscribers, and AT&T is preparing to tout similar plans.
Fortunately, these days you can avoid the big guys and still get some of the best smartphones, with no contract, and save money in the long run by paying a lower monthly bill.
Here are three of the best phones you can get without a traditional $70-and-up monthly bill. They’re not the only low-cost options, but all three are also currently available on major wireless carriers at a higher monthly price. Consider these alternatives if you’re on an individual plan and want to save some cash by paying a little more up-front:
Specs: 4.65-inch display (1280-by-720 resolution), dual-core processor, 5-megapixel camera, 16 GB storage; runs Android 4.1
Phone Price: $349
Service Cost: $45 per month for unlimited data (slowed down after 2 GB), 500 minutes, pay-per-text
Total Two-Year Cost: $1429 (Compare to $1830 on Verizon with 2GB of data and 450 minutes)
The unlocked Galaxy Nexus is still one of the best Android phones around, for one simple reason: It runs the latest version of Google’s software (Android 4.1, or Jelly Bean), and will likely be one of the first phones in line for future updates. That’s not always the case for carrier-specific versions of Nexus phones. Jelly Bean is smooth and fast, and includes Google Now, a virtual assistant to rival Apple’s Siri. With T-Mobile, you get a big discount on the cost of service by bringing your own phone, and you’re not bound by a contract, either. Grab the Galaxy Nexus from the Google Play Store, and throw in a T-Mobile Value Plan SIM card.
Specs: 4.5-inch display (800-by-480 resolution), dual-core processor, 8-megapixel camera, 16 GB storage; runs Android 2.3
Phone Price: $435 (white model)
Service Cost: $57 per month for 2 GB of data, 500 minutes, pay-per-text (estimated)
Total Two-Year Cost: $1,803 (Compare to $2,020 on Sprint with 450 minutes, unlimited data and text)
The interesting thing about Ting is that you only pay for the minutes, text and data that you actually use. Consume less than the amount you signed up for, and your bill drops. Use more, and it goes up. There are no crazy overage charges, nothing gets wasted, and mobile hotspot use is included for free. (I picked the $57 combination of data and minutes above because it compares well to other carriers’ plans, but conservative users will pay much less.) As for the Galaxy S II, it’s an excellent Android phone with a slim design and a top-notch camera. Ting uses Sprint’s network, so it’s a similar experience for less money.
Specs: 3.5-inch display (960-by-640 resolution), dual-core processor, 8-megapixel camera, 16 GB storage; runs iOS 5
Phone Price: $650
Service Cost: $35 per month for unlimited data (slowed down after 2.5 GB), 300 minutes and unlimited text
Total Two-Year Cost: $1,490 (Compare to $2,020 on Sprint with 450 minutes, unlimited data and text)
Don’t be scared of the astronomical sticker price. Virgin Mobile’s service is so cheap that it pays off big-time in the long run. The carrier is owned by Sprint, so it’s the same network without the fully-unlimited data. (There are no data overage charges on Virgin, but you’ll get 2G speeds of 256 kbps or less after using 2.5 GB in a month.) If you need more minutes, $10 more per month gets you 1,200 minutes total, or $20 more gets you unlimited talk time.
