Apple Becomes the Top Computer Seller, Beats HP

Apple Becomes the Top Computer Seller, Beats HP

It is a reality that Apple is in the list of most profit-earning manufacturers over the past few years despite havinga low market share (due to its high prices).

According to report by Canalys, Apple has sold more computersystems than any other manufacturer in the world.
According to report, Apple sold 21 million systems in the second quarter of 2012, up from 13.1 million of the same quarter of 2011 and experienced a 59.9% increase in sales.
Compared to that, HP sold 13.5 million unites, down from 15.2 million of the same quarter of last year. Lenovo however, experienced a good increase in sales byselling 13.1 million units in this quarter, up from 10.3 million.
Apple captured 19.4% of the market-share in Q2 compared to the 12.5% and 12.1% of HP and Lenovo respectively.
One of the biggest reason is the launching of Retina Display Macbook which has a jaw-dropping resolution of 2800 x 1800.
Apple already earned huge profits by its Macintosh line of computers as early as 2010 when Apple had hold only 9% of the market shares but earned 35% of the market’s profits mainly due to the high prices of its products.

How Can You Get Windows 8?

How Can You Get Windows 8?

Will you upgrade to Windows 8? Will you get it on a new PC? On a tablet? Or do you plan to skip it as you may have skipped Vista? For those willing to dip their toes into the waters of Microsoft's drastic re-thinking of its flagship chunk of software, there are a number of options for how to actually get it. And in a poll on PCMag run back when Windows 8 Release Preview was launched, a surprising number of you want to start in with the new OS the moment it's available. For those eager beavers, along with anyone else wanting to move forward in the Windows world, we submit the following guide.
As of a couple days ago, we know exactly when you'll be able to get Windows 8—October 26. Windows head honcho Stephen Sinofsky made the announcement at Microsoft's annual sales announcement on July 18. This availability applies to both new PCs and tablets and to upgrade options.
Let's take a look at the different paths you can take to get to Windows 8 once that date rolls around, with the two primary options being upgrade versus new machine.
Windows 8Upgrade
It looks like upgrade pricing will be a lot more aggressive than it has been for previous Windows generations. Not only has Apple set the tone with its cheap $29.99 upgrades for Mac OS X, but the pricing information that Microsoft has put out so far decidedly slants towards the inexpensive. In any case, both Apple and Microsoft are far more interested in having you buy a new computer rather than just updating your existing model. One columnist has even called the pricing known so far "fire sale prices."

So what will you pay for your Windows 8 upgrade? It depends on when you bought your current PC, whether you want the standard or Pro edition, and whether you opt for download or store purchase of upgrade discs. Though there had been speculation that Microsoft would move to the Apple system of download-only software installation, Windows 8 will be available at retail stores, as proven by a $69.99 DVD offer announced by Microsoft. The small table below summarizes the introductory upgrade pricing options we know about so far. Microsoft has said the prices are good till January 31, 2013.

Upgrade ConditionsCost of Upgrade to Windows 8 Pro
You bought a Windows 7 PC after June 2, 2012$14.99 download
You have any PC running Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7$39.99 download or $69.99 packaged disc
One question that remains is whether Microsoft will offer a full, non-upgrade version at retail. Another is pricing difference between non-Pro and Pro Editions. We'd assume that with fewer features, the non-Pro Windows 8 upgrade will cost even less, and we can expect announcements on this as we move to the RTM (release to manufacturing—first week of August) and GA (general availability—October 26) stages of development.
One final bit about availability (unfortunately without pricing details, yet) is that there will be System Builder editions of Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro. This is for folks who aren't upgrading from an existing Windows installation, but rather taking it upon themselves to build their own PCs from component parts. This is a particularly popular endeavor among PC gamers.
YouTube Introduces Face Blurring Feature For Video Upload

YouTube Introduces Face Blurring Feature For Video Upload

Video sharing websites have nowadays become a strong platform to highlight social evils. However, footage featuring kids, political dissidents in oppressive regimes, or victims of sexual assault needs to be handled with care. An annual report from international human rights organization WITNESS titled Cameras Everywherestates"No video-sharing site or hardware manufacturer currently offers users the option to blur faces or protect identity". This prompted YouTube to take up the gauntlet, resulting in an announcement earlier today on its official blog of a new face-blurring tool. It lets you smudge all faces in an uploaded video, thus ensuring complete anonymity for the subject(s).
To use the effect on an uploaded video, go to the Video Manager section in your YouTube account, then click on the Edit button next to the video you want to blur. In the page that loads, switch to theEnhancements tab at the top, then click on the Additional features button below the video. Finally, click the Apply button under the Blur All Faces option. Once complete, you can delete the original uploaded video. However, note that the technology hasn't been perfected, so make it a point to carefully go through the modified version before publishing it online.

While this is a welcome step from Google, looking at incidents like the Guwahati molestation case, the next obvious step is to allow selective smudging of faces instead of an all-or-nothing approach. Once the technology evolves to incorporate such a feature, it will become a powerful tool to turn the spotlight on the perpetrators of a crime, while protecting the victim's identity.

Computer operating speed is of concern to almost everyone. In a recent series of tests PC SPY identified several programs that were responsible for the biggest cause of system performance slow downs. Number one culprit...

Norton Internet Security which was responsible for slowing down the test computer by a staggering 58 percent.

Here are several other offenders...

- 1000 installed fonts
- Kaspersky Internet Security
- Yahoo Messenger
- AOL Instant Messenger
- McAfee Security Center
Removing or disable these programs and you could see a dramatic increase in speed, without spending any money.

Our suggestion

Remove them.

In the case or Norton, replace it with the Free Windows Defender which can be downloaded fromhttp://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Facebook withdraws 'Find Friends Nearby' feature

Facebook withdraws 'Find Friends Nearby' feature

Facebook has pulled out its Find Friends Nearby feature hours after it was silently rolled out to iOS and Android platforms. The social network says the feature was only meant for testing, not for a formal release. Facebook's FFN service enabled users to find friends who are geographically nearby. The feature, however, drew harsh criticism with tech pundits dubbing it as a 'creepy' and 'stalking' app.

ABC News confirms that Facebook has pulled the feature. The report also quotes an official statement from Facebook, which explains why the feature was pulled. "With all tests, some get released as full products, others don’t. Nothing more to say on this for now, but we’ll communicate to everyone when there is something to say,” reads the official statement.
Initially dubbed as Freindshake, the feature that was never announced officially was made available on Facebook's mobile apps and mobile site. Facebook engineer Ryan Patterson confirmed that he had developed the feature along with fellow engineer for a hackathon project.
“I built Find Friends Nearby with another engineer for a hackathon project. While it was originally called ‘Friendshake’, we settled on ‘Find Friends Nearby’ for launch (the URL was a little bit of a homage to the previous iteration),” he said.

Reports on the web suggested the new FFN feature was related to Facebook's recent acquisition of Glancee app, a location-based, "social discovery" app designed to connect users with friends. It was also speculated that Facebook was attempting to compete with the popularity of Highlight, another social-discovery application.

China launches two more Beidou navigation satellites

China launches two more Beidou navigation satellites

China has moved a step closer to completing its own navigation and positioning satellite network with the launch of two more navigation satellites.
It brings the Beidou system, which became operational with coverage of China last December, to 13 satellites.
To have global coverage, the country eventually aims to have 35 satellites in orbit by 2020.
China hopes that Beidou will wean it off the US Global Positioning System.
Just like GPS, the Chinese system is designed to let users determine their positions to within a few meters.
Beidou, also known as Compass, has been developed for both military and civilian uses.
The two satellites went up on Monday morning from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in southwest Sichuan province.
They were carried on a Long March-3B rocket, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.
"The two satellites will help improve the accuracy of the Beidou, or Compass system," Xichang Satellite Launch Centre said in a statement carried by the agency.
GPS
  • Sat-nav systems determine a position by measuring the distances to a number of known locations - the spacecraft constellation in orbit
  • In practice, a sat-nav receiver will capture atomic-clock time signals sent from the satellites and convert them into the respective distances
  • A sat-nav device will use the data sent from at least four satellites to get the very best estimate of its position - whether on the ground or in the sky
  • The whole system is monitored from the ground to ensure satellite clocks do not drift and give out timings that might mislead the user
Now partially operational, Beidou makes China only the third country in the world, after the US and Russia, to have its own navigation system.
Russia's Glonass satellite network has 31 satellites in orbit, but only 24 of them are operational. Four more are in reserve, one undergoing trials, and two under maintenance.
According to the Russian Space Agency, Roscosmos, Russia plans to spend $694m (£427m) on its Glonass system this year.
At a recent annual Satellite Navigation Forum in Moscow, Russia's deputy prime minister Vladislav Surkov said that more than 300 billion roubles (£6bn, $10.2bn) have been budgeted to further develop Glonass and bring 30 satellites into operation by 2020.
Europe has also been building a navigation system, called Galileo, which has two satellites in orbit, launched in October last year. The next two are scheduled to follow later this year.
The space project of the European Commission, the EU's executive arm, plans to have all 26 Galileo satellites in orbit by the end of 2015.

Samsung open exclusive retail stores in India

Samsung open exclusive retail stores in India

Research in Motion (RIM) and Samsung have opened their dedicated brand stores in Delhi – a move that is likely to help the smartphone majors consolidate their position in the rapidly growing Indian market.

Samsung Electronics launched their first Samsung Mobile Brand Store in Select City Mall in Delhi. The store features Samsung's entire range of Samsung smartphones, tablets and accessories.
RIM says its BlackBerry Premium Store will give users an opportunity to discover BlackBerry experience with special zones including consumer and enterprise apps along with product services. The zones will also have a special demo zone to promote performance of the BlackBerry smartphones. The BlackBerry Premium Store will be open seven days a week. RIM plans to open its Premium Stores in other metro cities in near future.
"Serving as a gateway into the world of BlackBerry, The BlackBerry Premium Store will offer holistic consumer experience on BlackBerry consumer and enterprise services to its consumers," the company said in a statement.

Samsung's Mobile Brand Store will also deliver a similar experience to its visitors. The store will have dedicated area for demos, so that multiple demos are held at same time.
"The Samsung Mobile Brand Store is a significant step in the direction of creating new, unique and holistic product experiences for consumers at the retail level. The Samsung Mobile Brand Store will allow consumers to engage and interact with Samsung Smartphones and tablets through convenient table top displays, multiple product demonstrations and dedicated areas for interacting with Samsung Product Consultants," said B.D. Park, president and CEO, South West Asia, Samsung Electronics and managing director, Samsung India Electronics.
Currently, handset makers such as Nokia and Micromax have their exclusive stores across the country. These exclusive stores have helped these companies consolidate their basessignificantly. Other manufacturers such as Samsung by now had depended on retail stores such as HotSpot, Croma and Jumbo.
The exclusive retail stores may boost RIM's sales in the near future, desperately needed as it has been lagging far behind most players in the international market. RIM is now eyeing the Indian smartphone market, and is making attempts to enter the 2-tier and 3-tier cities as well. Itsrecent introduction of the new low-cost, BBOS 7.1-bearing Curve 9220 was no coincidence

Google uncovers Web-based digital glasses

Google uncovers Web-based digital glasses

London: Google has unveiled a pair of futuristic glasses for letting people look at life through internet-tinted glasses.
In a short video posted at a Project Glass page at Google+ social network, the wearer is seen taking pictures, checking the weather, getting directions, and placing a video call, all of which are controlled using voice activated icons that appear in the user’s field of vision.
Android software is believed to power the gadget, enabling similar features to its smartphone and tablets.

A 3G or 4G data connection, motion sensors and GPS navigation are believed to be included in the device’s capabilities.
“We think technology should work for you — be there when you need it and get out of your way when you don’t,” members of the project team said in a Google+ post.
“A group of us from Google X (Labs) started Project Glass to build this kind of technology; one that helps you explore and share your world.”
“We took a few design photos to show what this technology could look like and created a video to demonstrate what it might enable you to do,” Google said, stressing that the glasses were a concept far from being brought to market.
“We’re sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input.”
The project team invited people to express ideas for the glasses at the Google+ page.
The glasses will not go on sale until later this year, but Google employees will be testing them in public over the next few months.

LinkedIn Launches Japanese ‘Navi’ Site

LinkedIn Launches Japanese ‘Navi’ Site

LinkedIn (NYSE:LNKD) is continuing its strong Asia push, having passed the 25 million user mark in the APAC region back in February. The service officially launched in Japan back in October, and opened an office there as well. And just yesterday the company launched a LinkedIn Navi site, in an effort to more fully explain the service to potential Japanese users.
The site can be accessed at jp.navi.linkedin.com, and from there users can find out what LinkedIn is, and how to use it and benefit from it. There is also a helpful video (see below) to break down what LinkedIn is about, as well as user interviewsthat shed some light on why the service is useful .
The idea of developing this sort of stand-alone ‘navi’ site is not a new one. Readers might recall that there was a similar sort of Navi Facebook site launched in Japan last year. Before that, there was howtotwitterinjapanese.com, although it has since gone offline.
Creating these sort of sites as a part of your localization strategy is an interesting tactic that I don’t recall seeing in many other regional markets. But you can’t hand-hold your users too much, so it’s definitely wise for LinkedIn – and any other company aspiring to enter Japan – to create a thorough, one-stop informative destination to educate new users.
Currently, LinkedIn’s own ad creation tool estimates there are about 426,000 members in Japan. So apparently the professional social network still has a lot of work to do. But this Navi site is certainly a good step towards reaching out to potential users in Japan.

  1. Anyone familiar with the Japanese tech scene may recognize a number of familiar faces in the ‘user interviews’ video, such as Joi Ito who is helping out LinkedIn in Japan
