Facebook buys AOL patents from Microsoft

Facebook buys AOL patents from Microsoft

Facebook is paying Microsoft $550m (£341m) for some of the patents it recently bought from AOL.
Microsoft paid more than $1bn for most of AOL's patents, beating rivals reported to have included Facebook.
A Facebook lawyer described the deal as: "Another significant step in our ongoing process of building an intellectual property portfolio to protect Facebook's interests."
Facebook was sued by Yahoo for patent infringement earlier this year.

"Today's agreement with Facebook enables us to recoup over half of our costs while achieving our goals from the AOL auction," said Microsoft's general counsel Brad Smith.
Microsoft bought 925 patents and patent applications from AOL. It is now selling 650 of those patents to Facebook as well as licences to the other 275.
There has been a series of recent patent deals between technology companies as they try to defend themselves in lawsuits.
If a company successfully sues another it can demand a sales ban of its competitor's products, or force the loser to pay expensive licence fees.
Since the start of the year, Intel, Google and Facebook are among those to have bought significant numbers of patents from other technology companies.
Facebook bought a number of patents from IBM last month.
Instagram deal
Also on Monday, Facebook reported results for the first three months of the year.
The company, which is preparing for a stock market listing, reported a drop in its first quarter net income to $205m from $233m in the same period last year.
It said that its advertising business usually slows down in the first quarter but that the growth of the business in previous years had masked that trend.
Facebook also revealed that it has agreed to pay $200m to Instagram if its recent $1bn deal to buy the photo-sharing firm were to fall through.

Microsoft Will Soon Start Charging $40/Month And Up For Its Bing Search API

Bing_moon_logo
Ever since Microsoft launched the Bing API a few years ago, this service was available for free to developers who wanted to use data from the company’s search engine in their own products. Today, however, Microsoft announced that it will soon start charging for access to the Bing Search API. The subscription price will start at around $40 per month and will include 20,000 queries. As part of this change, Microsoft will also start using its Windows Azure Marketplace to manage access to this service.
While Microsoft announced these general changes today, it did not release any specific information about the transition timeline and pricing structure for users who need more than 20,000 queries per month.
According to the Bing team, this change will give developers “access to fresher results, improved relevancy, and more opportunities to monetize their usage of the Search API.”
Until now, free access to its API gave Microsoft’s search engine a bit of a competitive advantage, as Google’s free custom search API only includes 100 queries per day.
It seems like charging for API access is becoming quite the trend among the major search players, though. Google, for example, also just started charging its high-volume users for access to its Maps API. Google’s Translate API, too, transitioned to a paid model late last year.
