Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Review

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Review

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 somehow becomes larger than its predecessor while barely changing hardware at all, leaving potential buyers to scratch their heads on the necessity of an upgrade.

In the last year, Samsung has released more tablets than you can shake a stick at. So many, in fact, that it has run out of sensible ways to name them all, leaving us with the new “Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1.” No it’s not the second Galaxy Tab, and it won’t even be the only 10.1-inch Android tablet from Samsung this year. Pretty soon we’ll have the Galaxy Note 10.1 to contend with as well. Strange name aside though, is the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 worth your time? Find out below.

Video Overview

Look and feel

Samsung doesn’t make a habit on delivering horribly uncomfortable and ugly products (though it definitely does from time to time), and the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is another solid improvement in the design and feel of the Korean manufacturer’s larger tablets. Compared to the original Galaxy Tab 10.1, it’s about 1 mm thicker and weighs an extra ounce, but it definitely looks and feels like a better, more unique tablet. It’s still encased in plastic, but now has a darker slate coloring to its shell.
More importantly, this is one of the first tablets that has placed its speakers on the front so they, you know, face at you when you’re watching something. The difference in sound volume is quite profound, giving the Tab 2 at least one small leg up on Apple’s iPad. The speakers complement the new style and add a small border on the left and right sides of the screen (when held in landscape orientation). We’d normally complain about added bezel, but Samsung has also reduced the size of the black glass surrounding the screen.

Though it’s not unique to Samsung, our one problem with the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is that 10 inches is just not a great size for widescreen Android tablets. Apple found a great size in 9.7 inches, but the secret to its comfort is its 3:4 aspect ratio, similar to that of an old, non-HD TV. Android tablets have a widescreen, which makes it a bit too tall when you’re using it in portrait mode and a bit too wide when you’re holding it in landscape. We’ve preferred Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Galaxy Tab 8.9 better than its 10-inch models, including this one.

Screen

If you haven’t seen the third iPad’s “Resolutionary” display, you’d be best not to try it unless you’re going to buy. Attempting to go back to a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution after spending so much time with Apple’s 2048 x 1536 pixel Retina display is a definite challenge. There’s nothing technically wrong with it – it’s serviceable – but it is a definitive step down from the newer full HD tablets entering the market. Like most components of the new Tab 2 10.1, the screen is last year’s model, putting it in more direct competition with the iPad 2.
We’ve noticed that the Tab 2 doesn’t appear to have quite as good a screen (colorwise) as its predecessor. This was likely done to save money. The difference isn’t huge, but it appears to be there. Sadly, we don’t have the original device to compare side-by-side to this one.

Operating system

Samsung has made the leap to Android 4.0. The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 runs Google’s most up-to-date operating system, and, as usual, it’s been modified with TouchWiz, to make it look and operate more consistently with other Samsung devices.

Add caption
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Review app storeEverything looks mostly the same, but Samsung has upped the size of app icons on the homepage and the notification tray and simplified the overall design to look much closer to Google’s standard Android 4.0. Because it’s the new version of Android, however, buyers will be a bit future-proof since most new apps are being written to take advantage of the new features in the OS. For the first time, Android 4.0 is an OS that runs on both tablets and smartphones, like the Galaxy Nexus.

Preinstalled apps

As usual, Samsung has loaded its tablet with a bunch of useful and useless apps. One cool feature: This tablet comes with one year of free 50GB Dropbox support. Not bad. This should help you sync files between PC and tablet. The Peel Universal TV Remote is also quite cool, and we learned how to control our TV instantly. Unfortunately, it won’t control an Xbox or other devices, so if you don’t have cable, you’re a bit out of luck.
Other apps that come pre-installed include Amazon Kindle, AllShare, ChatON (we couldn’t get this working), Netflix, Next Issue (digital magazines), Zinio, Polaris Office, and a bunch of Samsung Gaming and Media “Hubs,” which try to sell you content.

Keyboard

We don’t usually make a big deal about keyboards, but Samsung’s new default keyboard has a number row on it for the first time, ending the annoying way you’d have to flip to an alternate keyboard screen just to type some numbers. This is great. Not so great, however, is the added handwriting recognition. No matter how hard we tried to accurately write out letters, Samsung’s software never picked them up correctly. To this day, we have not been able to get it to recognize the letter “g”. Not once. But the regular keyboard: thumbs up.

Specs

This tablet is running almost identical specs to the first Tab 10.1. The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 runs on a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage (11.5GB accessible), a 3-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, and a 0.3-megapixel (VGA) front camera. There is also a microSD slot, a proprietary Samsung charging port (no USB or HDMI), an audio jack, two nice front-facing speakers, and an infrared sensor. Common features like Bluetooth 3.0, accelerometer, gyroscope, and GPS are also included. This also a Wi-Fi tablet, so Wi-Fi b/g/n are the main ways it connects to the Web.
In the Quadrant benchmark test, we achieved a 2,300 to 2,400 average score, which is a bit lower than the Galaxy Tab 8.9 (2,450), Galaxy Tab 7.7 LTE (2,500 to 3,400), or the nearly 5,000 we’ve seen on the HTC One X and S. Still, the Tab 2 10.1 is ahead of its official predecessor. The original Galaxy Tab 10.1 only got about a 1,900 in our tests.

Camera

Only Apple seems willing to invest in tablet cameras. The third-generation iPad has a fantastic rear camera, but even it has a terrible front-facing camera. With the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, Samsung seems to have decided that cameras need only exist on its tablets; they don’t need to take good pictures. The rear camera is as bad as ever, lacking an adjustable autofocus and taking drab pictures in any circumstance. The front camera has been severely downgraded from last year as well. Instead of a 2-megapixel front camera, the Tab 2 now has a VGA (0.3 megapixel) camera. Not cool for any of you who enjoy video chatting.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 2 outward-facing camera takes grainy images both in and outside.
A closeup of a doorknob reveals a startling lack of detail from the camera. Even with decent lighting, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 camera takes bad photos outside. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 2 is a step down from the previous model.
Still, as much as we hate to admit it, taking pictures isn’t something we do much of on our tablets – the iPad included. If you’re looking for a decent camera experience, aim for the new iPad, but it’s slim pickings for camera fans across the board.
(Warning: The Tab 2 is incapable of playing 1080p videos. If your collection of full HD content is vast, consider another tablet.)

Battery life

We don’t do traditional battery rundown tests, but we did perform one this time. We charged the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and its 7,000mAh battery to full (all night) and let it sit on with the screen set to not timeout. Under these conditions (along with some fairly minor use), the battery lasted between 8 and 9 hours before it died. This isn’t record setting, nor is it particularly bad. It’s about on par with what you might expect.

Overall

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is not a bad tablet, but it’s also almost identical, and in some ways inferior, to last year’s Galaxy Tab 10.1. At $400 it’s not overly expensive, but it’s also not a deal. You can likely find the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 for less money by now. Also, for $400, you can still afford an iPad 2 and a number of other good, if not superior tablets. We were really hoping for a price between $250 and $300, but Samsung seems determined to keep its prices high. And, as always, we don’t prefer the 10-inch form factor for Android tablets. Apple has made it work, but for Android, smaller sized tablets like the Galaxy Tab 8.9, Motorola Xyboard 8.2, or Galaxy Tab 7.7 are preferable because they’re easier to hold, more portable, but retain the basic functionality of a tablet.

Highs

  • Runs Android 4.0
  • Front-facing speakers
  • Solid construction
  • microSD card slot

Lows

  • $400 price is a bit high
  • Poor front and back cameras
  • Larger than last year’s Galaxy Tab 10.1

Samsung Galaxy S3 launches

Samsung Galaxy S3 launches

Later today, Samsung — the largest phone manufacturer on the planet — will launch the Galaxy S3 at the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event in London. Other than Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5, which should arrive in the fall, the Samsung Galaxy S3 will be the biggest (and most anticipated) launch of the year.
Unlike the iPhone, though, which usually remains heavily wrapped in mystery until its unveiling on stage, we already know quite a lot about the Galaxy S3. While the following hardware specs won’t be confirmed until the actual launch event, most of the bullet points below can be reported with fairly high confidence.
  • The Samsung Galaxy S3 will have a 720p or 1080p display. Depending on who you talk to, the S3 will either have last year’s HD Super AMOLED Plus 1280×720 display, or a first-of-its-kind, jaw-dropping 1920×1080 display. A 1080p screen is definitely possible, and would give the S3 an edge on other recently-released phones such as HTC’s One series. Screen size is expected to be somewhere between 4.6 and 4.8 inches; the S3 definitely won’t be a small handset.
  • The Galaxy S3 will ship with Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich — but unfortunately (or fortunately, if you’re a diehard Samsung fan) it’ll still be skinned with TouchWiz.
  • An artist's impression of the Galaxy S3There will be blue and white versions of the Galaxy S3 available at launch. It isn’t clear whether there will also be a black version, or if the blue version will simply be so dark as to appear black (like the Galaxy Note).
  • There will be at least two major variants of the Samsung Galaxy S3 with different SoCs: One model will come with Samsung’s own quad-core Exynos 4412 SoC, a 32nm chip clocked at 1.4GHz, and another will sport Qualcomm’s dual-core Snapdragon S4 Krait SoC, a 28nm chip clocked at (probably) 1.5GHz. The Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S3 will be sold by carriers with 4G LTE deployments (Verizon, for example), while the Exynos-powered S3 will be sold in 3G markets. Because LTE uses different spectrum bands all over the world, there will also be lots of regional variants of the Samsung Galaxy S3.
  • The jury is still out on how powerful (and efficient) the quad-core Exynos 4412 is. Samsung’s extensive use of the dual-core Snapdragon S4 implies that the Exynos 4412 isn’t significantly faster or more efficient. The Exynos 4 series is the first Samsung chip to utilize per-core scaling and voltage adjustments, but other than that it’s a fairly humdrum quad-core Cortex-A9 part. Unlike TI’s OMAP4 orNvidia’s Tegra 3, there’s no low-power “companion core” to offload processing to. GPU-wise, the Snapdragon has the Adreno 225, which competes well with the Mali 400 in the Exynos 4. Ultimately, we’ll have to wait for some real-world benchmarks to see if the Galaxy S3 really makes use of all four cores.
  • Memory- and storage-wise, the S3 will probably have 1GB of RAM and 16-32GB of storage; no big surprises there.
  • Little is known about the camera, but rumors seem to suggest that the S3 will have a 12-megapixel rear shooter, but it could be as large as 16MP or as small as 8MP, too.
  • The Galaxy S3 will have enough battery life to last a whole day, with moderate to heavy usage. This is part of an overarching scheme from Samsung to make sure all of its phones last from when you wake up until you go to bed — something that many of its recent phones haven’t been able to do. With the huge screen and the quad-core processor (and LTE on the Snapdragon-powered handsets), we assume that the Galaxy S3 will have a fairly beefy battery
ExtremeTech will be at the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S3, which is scheduled for 2pm EST today (May 3). Be sure to check back for lots of pretty photos of Samsung’s new fondleslab, and hopefully some hands-on impressions as well.
We’re also hoping for an answer to one of the most important questions: When will the Samsung Galaxy S3 launch in the US? We don’t think US carriers will botch the S3′s launch as badly as the S2, but who knows.

Samsung Becomes the World’s Best Handset Maker for the First Time

Samsung Becomes the World’s Best Handset Maker for the First Time

In the technology world, gadget makers like to claim their dominance over certain products they manufacture. It not only helps to market them well, but also provides for a sense of security over their accomplishment in actually manufacturing a genius idea on mass-production. When it comes to mobiles, Nokia declared itself to be the king and its competitors had reluctance in accepting the order of their ranks in the market. But for the past 14 years, the reports indicated Nokia to have held the first position.
Recently, Samsung won the race to the top and managed to achieve the title of the world’s numero uno handset maker. Strategy Analytics based its estimates on the shipment records of Samsung and declared its new status in the world of mobile manufacturing. According to it, Samsung shipped 93.5 million handsets in the first quarter which left Nokia with 82.7 million shipments behind it. Samsung’s shipment also helped it achieve market’s 25% share as opposed to Nokia’s 23%.
For many of the Samsung fans out there, it would be news of reassurance and satisfaction that finally their favourite handset maker got the recognition it deserved. Motorola was the first title holder, but Nokia beat it in 1998. The latter had a great track record of sales and customer satisfaction and still enjoys a good reputation. But Samsung achieved in mobile-making the status that it was looking for in other electronics departments. Now the thing to watch out for from Samsung would be, how long will it maintain the new title?

Samsung overtakes Nokia in mobile phone

Samsung overtakes Nokia in mobile phone

Samsung Electronics has overtaken Nokia to become the world's largest maker of mobile phones, according to research firm Strategy Analytics.
Nokia took the top spot in 1998 from Motorola, but in the first quarter of 2012 Samsung shipped 93m phones compared to almost 83m by Nokia.
Samsung also reported its highest quarterly profit since 2008.
Net profit was 5.05tn won ($4.5bn; £2.8bn) in the quarter ending 31 March, up 81% from 2.78tn won last year.
Samsung is also the world's biggest TV and flat screen maker.
"We cautiously expect our earnings momentum to continue going forward, as competitiveness in our major businesses is enhanced," said Robert Yi, head of investor relations at Samsung.
Bright future
The firm said its IT and mobile communications division, which manufactures the smartphones, made an operating profit of 4.27tn won during the period, as revenues in the division surged 86% from a year earlier.
Samsung will unveil the latest version of its Galaxy range of phones on 3 May.
The Galaxy range has been very popular and helped Samsung overtake Apple to become the world's biggest seller of smartphones.
"The smartphone market has almost only two players, Samsung and Apple," said Lee Sei-Cheol of Meritz Securities.
"Since its Galaxy3 phone is being unveiled in May, Samsung will keep enjoying sales growth in its mobile phone division."

Analysts said that given its robust growth and dominance in the sector, Samsung was well placed to benefit from this growth and boost its market share.
However, given the robust growth in the sector, other smartphone makers are also keen to introduce new products and tap into the fast-growing market.
Samsung is facing stiff competition from rivals such as US-based Apple, Finland's Nokia, and Taiwan's HTC.
Apple, which said earlier this week that it sold 35 million of its iPhones in the first quarter, is expected to launch a new version of its handset later this year.
Analysts said that as more models are launched, manufacturers may have to the cut price of their handsets in a bid to attract consumers, a move that may see profit margins shrink.
"Samsung's handset earnings may weaken in the latter half of this year, with the possible launch of Apple's iPhone 5," said Brian Park of Tong Yang Securities.
Chip troubles
Another area of concern for Samsung is likely to be its chip manufacturing unit, which has been hurt by slowing global demand for personal computers.
Models showing Samsung Galaxy phonesThe success of Galaxy range of handsets has helped Samsung offset falls in other units
The firm is one of the world's biggest makers of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) chips, which are widely used in personal computers.
However, demand for these chips has been declining as consumers turn to tablet PCs, which mostly use flash memory chips.
At the same time, falling prices have also hurt profitability in the sector.
Samsung's memory-chip division saw its profits slide by 54% during the first quarter when compared with the same period a year earlier.
The company said it expected the demand for DRAM chips to rebound in the coming months, but warned that growing competition in the sector "will lead to a price decline".

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) review

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) review

There's an age-old saying: "If a tree falls in the forest and no one's around to hear it, does it make a sound?" We're tempted to posit that question to Samsung as it clears room in its crowded product portfolio for yet another Galaxy Tab. One month after announcing it at Mobile World Congress, the outfit's bringing its 7-inch sequel to the masses. As if Sammy's Galaxy Tab lineup weren't already overflowing, this guy comes bearing internals that make it near-identical to the OG Galaxy Tab and 7.0 Plus that have come before it.

A few specs, though, have seen downgrades: the front-facing camera now has VGA resolution, and the dual-core TI OMAP processor powering it is clocked at a lower 1GHz. Still, the 1024 x 600 TFT LCD display remains intact, as does the 3-megapixel rear camera, microSD slot and IR blaster. It's a puzzling hardware refresh ushering in modest tweaks to a proven design, with the biggest change of all being the move to Ice Cream Sandwich (with TouchWiz, of course). Is that software upgrade alone compelling enough to warrant an entirely new piece of hardware in Samsung's lineup? Maybe, maybe not. It all comes down to price, and at $250 this WiFi-only tablet could give consumers with Kindle Fire ire something to talk about. Follow past the break to see what we mean.

Samsung Galaxy S III Expected To Reach The Level of iPhone

Samsung Galaxy S III Expected To Reach The Level of iPhone

After considering rumors, we can say that Samsung`s Galaxy S III is now approaching the level of Apple iPhone which seems to be really good for Samsung, and along with other rumors today we have another mentioned below:
After its two master blasters i.e. Samsung Galaxy S and S II, third one has been kept quite hidden and now all what we have about it are rumors. According to a latest rumor the device may have a new screen, and it surely will be eye-catching if this rumor is true.

Expected Specs
The report has been published in DDaily that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S III will include 4.65-inch Super AMOLED Plus Display, for the very first time. The screen will be able to support a display of 720p, and such screen will make this smartphone to be the best in the market, while on the other hand HTC is working hard to enhance its point in the market by its new HTC One Lineup, Samsung will surely ruin their motives by releasing its latest impressive smartphone.
If we talk only about the display of Samsung, then till now the best display is 4.65-inch Super AMOLED display, present in Galaxy Nexus as well as Samsung Galaxy S II HD (only in LTE handsets). According to Koreans the motto of Samsung this time is to give the best AMOLED display which has not been seen yet.
No Information About The Release Date
The main question is still unanswered and not even a rumor has said something about it and it is that when this smartphone will be released? Everyone is waiting for this HQ smartphone and Samsung, instead of releasing the date, is not responding at all on this particular issue. Some rumors have also said that this phone is in the hand of Country Carriers which points to only one thing that this smartphone will soon be released. We may say that they are testing the device because such high quality device is really necessary to be checked first. It seems that Samsung will announce the handset officially at Mobile World Congress.
But Samsung should take each and every step very carefully because HTC is trying its best to give its best shot by introducing new features in HTC One series.

Samsung ships five million Galaxy Notes in just five months

Samsung ships five million Galaxy Notes in just five months

Five is an important number for Samsung's Galaxy Note. It has a 5.3-inch screen and now, just five months since it debuted Samsung has announced it's shipped five million units (the one million mark was crossed right around the end of December). That's certainly long enough for you to decide if you're in love with its super-sized frame or the accompanying S-Pen stylus, but unfortunately it has not been quite enough time for the highly-anticipated Ice Cream Sandwich software update to be released. While the world waits for the Premium Suite of apps and Android 4.0, let's think back to all the good times we had, including its initial unveiling, our original review and finally its arrival in the US on AT&T. So, are you convinced yet that there's a place in the world for a device like this, or five million phablets later are you still thinking this is just a fad?

Update: If you prefer to use your stylus for kanji or kana, Engadget Japan has NTT Docomo's announcement that it will release the Galaxy Note with LTE, branded the SC-05D, on its network April 6th.

Samsung About To Release Another Low End Device By The Name of “Galaxy Pocket”

Well, it seems like Samsung is really hitting the low end markets, as you might remember that previously, the launched the new Galaxy Y smartphone and then recently another low end smartphone named Galaxy mini 2 was launched. Both of these smartphones were targeted to the budget conscious consumers but it seems like Samsung was not satisfied with them and now they have announced another, lower end handset named as Samsung Galaxy Pocket.
Very Basic Android Device
This smartphone has been announced officially today by Samsung and it can be called as the most basic Android device offered by the Korean manufacturer. This handset does not come with the usual bells and whistles and it will be a very lucrative device for all the budget conscious users.
Specifications
Samsung Galaxy Pocket offers an 832MHz single core processor under the hood and a 2.8 inch display screen having QVGA resolution. There is a fixed focus 2 MP camera located the back of the device while it is powered by a 1200 mAh battery under its back cover. Additionally, the Galaxy Pocket will have the standard connectivity features including 3.6 Mbps 3G radio, WiFi, AGPS. That’s not it; the device also comes with 3 GB internal storage memory.
Runs On Gingerbread
All of the above mentioned technical components are confined in a small body having 12 mm thickness the whole device weighs only 97 grams.  Software wise, it is a complete regular Android device as it runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread which is enhanced with the usual goodies like Google apps, Samsung’s ChatON service and last but not the least, TouchWiz UI from Samsung as well.
In our opinion it is a very decent handset and will prove very popular for those who are new to Android smartphones and students. There are not many low end Android phones available in the market, and Galaxy Pocket will definitely be appreciated by the consumers who cannot spend a lot of money of a handset.
Releasing Later This Year
Samsung Galaxy Pocket is scheduled to be released in UK later this year, and we have not received any information about its release in rest of the world. On the other hand, the price is also not disclosed yet but we don’t think that will be any higher than Galaxy mini 2 or Galaxy Y
